Outokumpu wins ISSF Sustainability Award

stahl und eisen -

International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) has given Outokumpu its annual sustainability award for the efforts of Outokumpu’s Mexican mill in water recycling. Water is used in various phases of the manufacturing process of stainless steel, from casting of steel slabs at melt shop via hot rolling to annealing, pickling and wet polishing in cold rolling. In 2015, Outokumpu used altogether 40 million m3 of water, out of which 95% was surface or rainwaters and only 5% municipal or groundwater. In all processes, water is recycled whenever possible, for instance through cooling towers.

5/23/2016 - Danieli Centro Met receives order from Outokumpu Stainless Oy, Finland

Innovative Q-Panels to be installed on stainless steel EAF

stahl und eisen -

Confirming the effectiveness of Danieli's Q-Panels in other stainless steel EAF installations, Outokumpu Stainless Oy has placed a new order to upgrade its stainless steel EAF with the Q-Panels technological package, in order to reduce heat losses and increase safety.

The Q-Panels, with their double-layer design, entrap the slag, which acts as a heat insulator, reducing by approximately 50 % the cooled surface exposed to heat radiance from the steel bath. The slag cuts down on the heat flux peaks created by the melting heat, and electrically insulates the pipes to reduce the possibility of arc flares. The two independent cooling circuits ensure higher reliability and operating safety. Thanks to their patented design, panel lifetime can be up to four times longer than conventional water-cooled panels, thus reducing maintenance costs and overall operating costs.
