Vallourec St. Saulve orders Danieli round bloom caster upgrade

Vallourec has contracted Danieli to supply a new 325-mm round section on the existing Danieli round bloom caster at St. Saulve. The 4-strand, 12-m radius CCM installed by Danieli in 2007 is equipped with advanced technology like Mould EMS, multi-bending radii with multiple W/S module, provision for Final EMS, and Level 1 and Level 2 Automation. The original casting section range was from 180 to 310 mm dia., and the steel grades being produced included API grades, special steels, and high-chromium alloys.

worldsteel announced the World Championship Finalists

The Regional Championship took place online for a 24-hour period on 30 November 2016. This year’s steelChallenge attracted 1 479 participants representing 37 countries. The eleventh edition added 36% more participants than the previous year. There were 128 708 attempts with the basic oxygen steelmaking simulation with 707 people successfully completing at least one run of the simulation and a total of 8 701 successful runs completed.

Final acceptance for H3 wirerod mill technology at AEMZ, Russia

The new 600 000-tpy mill has reached full contractual speed and exceeded daily capacity. The new AEMZ plant is rolling wirerod at 110 m/s, the fastest in Russia, and producing a wide range of steel grades, such as tyre cord, low-, medium- and high-carbon, micro-alloyed and reinforcement grades for construction purposes, spring steel, bearing steel, welding wire and CHQ grades.

Letter of Intent signed for potential sale of Speciality Steels business

Tata Steel UK announced the signing of a Letter of Intent with Liberty House Group to enter into exclusive negotiations for the potential sale of its Speciality Steels business for an enterprise value of £100 million subject to due diligence and corporate approvals. The Letter of Intent covers several South Yorkshire-based assets including the Rotherham electric arc steelworks, the steel purifying facility in Stocksbridge and a mill in Brinsworth as well as service centres in Bolton and Wednesbury, UK, and in Suzhou and Xi'an, China. Speciality Steels employs about 1,700 people making steels for the aerospace, automotive and the oil & gas industries.

The new Atakaş cold-rolling complex located in Iskenderun, Turkey, which consists of a continuous pickling line, two single-stand 6-high reversing mills, a vertical hot dip galvanizing line and a colour coating line, is ramping up production with tangible results in quality and reliability. Just 40 days after the processing of the first coil through the continuous pickling line, Danieli and Atakaş started-up cold rolling mill #1; one day later, the same coil was processed at the hot dip galvanizing line.

SSAB invests in carbon-dioxide-free internal transport

SSAB in Oxelösund, TFK Transport Research Institute and Kalmar, a part of Cargotec, are to initiate a unique multimillion-SEK project to develop and test carbon-dioxide-free internal transport powered by hydrogen and fuel cells. “This is a very good project for SSAB in Oxelösund, where we can now really study the possibilities to reduce our fossil dependence. In addition to completely changing the fuel, we also get a better machine,” says Jacob Sandberg, site manager at SSAB in Oxelösund. SSAB has significant internal transport activities which consist of forklift trucks and other vehicles, which currently predominantly run on fossil fuels. A total of some 50 different vehicles are in use in internal transport in Oxelösund.

2016 Steel Statistical Yearbook now available online

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has published its 2016 Steel Statistical Yearbook. It presents a cross-section of steel industry statistics. It contains comprehensive statistics from 2006 to 2015 on crude steel production by country and process, steel production by product, steel trade by product, apparent steel use and apparent steel use per capita by country, as well as production and trade of pig iron and directly reduced iron. It also includes data on production and trade of iron ore and trade of scrap. The statistics were collected from members of worldsteel and various international organisations. A PDF copy of the yearbook and all previous editions can be downloaded for free from worldsteel.org.

Contract for the supply of steel for two new ships

ArcelorMittal confirms that it has signed a contract for the supply of steel for two new cruise ships to be built by STX France at its shipyards in Saint-Nazaire (France). ArcelorMittal is thus again designated the preferred steel supplier for these projects, as it already had been for four ships built by STX France, including Harmony of the Seas, which was delivered in spring 2016.

October 2016 crude steel production increases 3.3 %

World crude steel production for the 65 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 136.5 million t (Mt) in October 2016, 3.3% up on October 2015. China’s crude steel production for October 2016 was 68.5 Mt, an increase of 4.0% compared to October 2015. Elsewhere in Asia, Japan produced 9.0 Mt of crude steel in October 2016, an increase of 0.6% compared to October 2015. India’s crude steel production was 8.3 Mt in October 2016, up by 12.3% on October 2015.

Tung Ho Steel orders water treatment plant from Danieli

Following the order for a new Danieli 0.6 Mtpy high-speed rolling mill for long products to be installed in the Phu My industrial zone, Tung Ho Steel has contracted Danieli to supply of a new water treatment plant to complete the rolling mill project. The WTP plant is designed to include closed circuits for the rolling mill equipment, the induction furnace and auxiliary users, and open circuits for the rolling mill, the reheating furnace, fast finishing block and water boxes users.

ArcelorMittal, Evonik, LafargeHolcim and Solvay announce the formation of a new Low Carbon Technology Partnerships Initiative across the steel, cement and chemicals industries. This new partnership will look at the potential synergies that exist between the manufacturing processes of these three energy intensive sectors, and how these synergies could be harnessed to reducing CO2 emissions.
